Today, we purchased a Planet Bike Comfort Tractor seat ($25) to solve a problem the stock Sonoma saddle was causing with the battery pack.
After raising the stock Sonoma seat on the new seat post, the springs at the back of the seat were directly over the battery pack and, at every bump on the road, were hammering at the top of the bag and the batteries inside. The battery pack of the Wilderness kit is a set of three 12-volt lead gel batteries cross-wired to deliver 36 volts to the motor. The batteries are within a black cordura bag that is velcroed to the rear rack. While riding the bike, the batteries bounce a bit inside the bag, because they are not really strapped to the rear rack. Before raising the seat with the new seat post, the battery pack was well behind the seat, there was nothing above the battery pack. After raising the seat, the battery pack came forward a bit, but the seat was elevated further back and above the bag. There was no longer any clearance above the bag. The hammering from the coil springs on the stock seat actually wore a small hole in the bag. For the past week, had been riding with a corrugated cardboard cut to size in the top of the bag, in an effort to cushion and prevent damage the the front cell in the battery pack. With the low-profile seat, the springs at the back of the seat are gone, and there is at least two inches clearance. |
